Air pollution levels have been spiking in parts of Allegheny County for weeks on end. Tracking down all of the sources of this pollution has been a real challenge.

As January 2026 came to a close and February began, the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) issued health warnings across the Pittsburgh region for harmful pollutants like hydrogen sulfide and particulate matter using the Allegheny Alerts system. Levels were particularly high for these two pollutants in the Mon Valley region.
