The U.S. state of Texas has issued a "pre-disaster declaration" in preparation for the potential spread of a parasitic insect that burrows into the bodies of humans and livestock, devouring tissue.

Governor Greg Abbott announced on the 5th that the pre-disaster declaration was activated to respond to the risk of New World screwworm infestation. Abbott stated, "Texas state law allows us to take preemptive action against the threat of pests that could cause severe damage to livestock, wildlife, and property," adding, "We will not wait until the damage actually arrives."
