“Neural Therapy” with Dr. John Burgess
Neural Therapy
A New Paradigm in Pain Management
Neural therapy is a system of injection therapy with local anesthetics, usually lidocaine and/or procaine, for the treatment of pain and systemic disease.
Who is Dr. John Burgess?
Dr. John Burgess is a nationally recognized leader in old school Osteopathy from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, an osteopathic school dedicated to family practice and broad spectrum medicine since 1979.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
1) Differentiate neural therapy from other injection approaches (e.g., corticosteroid mixes, dextrose prolotherapy) by describing its purpose, core agents (lidocaine/procaine), and scope for pain and systemic illness—then list at least two contrasts in mechanism or clinical intent.
2) Identify and prioritize potential interference fields (e.g., teeth, scars) using the Huneke framework, and apply the “lightning reaction” criteria (immediate symptom resolution, ≥20‑hour persistence, and lengthening symptom‑free intervals with repeats) to determine diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic response.
3) Perform foundational neural therapy safely and effectively by selecting sites for segmental treatment, executing low‑volume, well‑placed injections with aspiration to avoid intravascular/neuraxial complications, and outlining when to escalate to sympathetic chain or ganglionic techniques.
