Doctors investigating near-death experiences believe that they have found evidence suggesting that consciousness remains after the brain stops functioning. Researchers interviewed 63 patients who had recently survived heart attacks, 56 of the patients had no recollection of the period of unconsciousness they experienced while clinically dead.

Researchers interviewed 63 patients who had recently survived heart attacks, 56 of the patients had no recollection of the period of unconsciousness they experienced while clinically dead. However, upon questioning, 7 where found to have memories, which were classed as near-death experiences in 4 patients. When case notes were studied, it was discoverer that none of the patients were receiving low oxygen levels a factor which some scientists believe may be responsible for so-called “near-death” experiences. Study leader, Dr Sam Parnia, said that it might be that the mind or consciousness is independent of the brain.
